Curt Broadhead: Belmont. It has one of the greatest school systems in the country. It's a small town of only 25,000 people and only 10-15 minutes away from Boston. Also there are tons and tons of quiet, kid friendly neighborhoods. It's a perfect town for kids and it's convenient too since it's 5 minutes from Cambridge and 10 minutes from Boston.
Hye Caulley: Marshfield is nice. There is a new commuter rail there. Its outside the city, but only a 30 min. drive wo/traffic. Great neighborhoods. Also try Quincy.
Dalila Yoon: You will be hard pressed to find any rental (assumng you wish 3 bedrooms) at less than $ 1500/month.That said, try Melrose, Malden, Newton, Needham, Brookline, Natick,Westwood, and any number of other cities and towns.
Lavelle Viveiros: cities like Chelsea, Everett, Cambridge, Somerville, and Malden are right outside Boston and have fairly low rents as many of the immigrants that I work with live from south and central america live i! n those places and raise families. Also, all those cities are easily reached by the T (Boston's subway). Those cities are safe and a good place to raise kids. Boston neighborhoods like Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, and Mattapan have low rents but they might not be as safe as the cities I mentioned that are outside of Boston....Show more
Alexis Reyer: We are open to buying something and putting $1,000+ into a mortgage if we'll get more bang for our buck. Realtor.com has some listings within 30 miles of Boston in our price range (under (175K), but we're not familar with the areas. How does this change the recommendations? Thanks all! We really appreciate the input.
Marna Liddie: As a realtor here I would probably say that Weymouth or West Roxbury would be a great start to get your feet wet and reasonable for your expected income. I have lived in both. West Roxbury is a town in the city of Boston that is very kid oriented. They have a YMCA, plenty of parks ! & lots of holiday activities. There are many small neighborhoo! ds with lots of children because many people commute to Boston for work (either via car or public transportation). Weymouth is city about 10 miles(highway) outside of Boston with many of the same amenities. ...Show more
Jacques Teri: Some great towns I grew up in were Westford & Chelmsford MA. The commute is maybe about 30 minutes to Boston and both towns are extremely safe. In Westford the schools are some of the best in the state and Chelmsford has some amazing history. Plenty of stuff to do around there (apple picking in the fall, sledding in the winter, walking down beautiful streets in the spring, and swimming in the summer) Personally I think you'll find yourself very satisfied if you choose Westford....Show more
Sook Hershkowitz: I have read the previous answers and I have noticed one thing:1) People are recommending towns that will be WAY out of your price range for apartment rentals. They are either too close to the city (the closer, the more expensive! ), or are very rich cities and towns, with high rent.2) You will have a difficult time finding a 2 bedroom apartment for $1,000 or under, never mind a 3 bedroom. If you do find one for that amount, you will likely have to pay for heat, and all other utilties, which can be very expensive. 3) Find a map and draw a 25 mile arc around Boston. Look for apartments in those cities and towns west, north, and south of the arc. You'll get more for your money, most likely. Do research to see the reputation of these towns. Look on craigslist to see what apartments are renting for.4) Find out what the public transportation situation is like, assuming you'll be taking the train. Some cities have large parking lots for the train station, others are very small and fill up at 6:00 AM.I'm not trying to be Mr. "super negative", just realistic and helpful as I am familiar with the Boston area....Show more
